My name is Allan Schaap and I am a freelance photographer based in Arnhem in the Netherlands.
I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in the turbulent sixties. My interest in photography began when I was given a Kodak Instamatic camera for my 10th birthday. I began photographing my family, friends and just about anything else which took my interest. Returning to Johannesburg in the late seventies after living on the beautiful south coast of South Africa, my focus turned to reportage photography and specifically street life in Johannesburg. I joined the Photographic Society of South Africa and became a member of the Bensusan Photography library in Johannesburg where I spent many enjoyable hours studying the work of famous and influential South African photographers such as Sam Haskins, David Goldblatt and Jürgen Schadeberg. South Africa was on the path of transition and I wanted to be there to record it on film. The importance of freezing time on a single frame had never become so significant to me and I set about recording the people and situations I came across whilst exploring the streets in downtown Johannesburg and surrounding areas. At this time, I also completed a correspondence course in advanced photography to learn the technical aspects of my trade. The digital age was still largely unheard of and I spent many hours in the darkroom developing film and printing my pictures. My tutor was the highly-accredited Franklin J Sanborne (FPSSA, ARPS, FPSA) whose guidance, knowledge and wisdom helped to form me, the photographer, and my approach to photography to this day.
Besides providing images for books, brochures and publications, I have held 2 exhibitions; in Johannesburg and in the Netherlands.
Over the course of my career it has been my privilege to meet and photograph many wonderful people whether it be at weddings, during portrait sessions or on the street. Furthermore, I have met so many enthusiastic and talented models and have had a lot of fun on so many shoots whether in studio or at an outdoor location. A big thanks to all these people without whose collaboration this website would not have been possible to create in its present form.
